This paper presents the results of the investigation into the feasibility of using fibre cement residues and morisca mining tailings to produce bricks used in civil construction. It consists of five chapters, three of which are presented as articles that were published and authorized to compose this work. The first chapter presents the context of this research and the most relevant foundations of the literature applied to red ceramics. The materials object of this work were studied in terms of granulometry, plasticity, chemical and mineralogical composition, and thermal characteristics, as well as test specimens were made to analyze the behaviour of shrinkage, water absorption, compressive strength for soil-cement applications and strength bending for burned parts. The second and third chapters explore the application of morisca as a material for the production of bricks using the traditional burning methodology and the cementing methodology with the use of Portland cement. The second chapter presents the analysis of the technical viability of morisca powder for producing soil-cement bricks, given the Brazilian standards for soil-cement applications. The third chapter presents a solution for using rejects from the improvement of Piauí morisca, showing that these rejects in powder resemble the clays used in the traditional red ceramic industry, with clayey characteristics inherent in producing fired ceramic bricks. The results of these studies allowed us to define under which conditions morisca powder
can be used to produce cemented and fired bricks. Therefore, contributing to a more sustainable treatment of future disposal of fibre cement products, the fourth chapter shows that this material in powder form is viable in composites based on clay and cement, applied in the manufacture of bricks designated as ecological, meeting the technical specifications provided for in Brazilian standards for soil-cement bricks. The result of this work also establishes the viability conditions for the use of fibre cement powder. The thesis ends with chapter five, suggesting future work and conclusions about the solutions for applying these environmental liabilities.
