Overview The proposal for creating the Graduate Degree Program in Geography (PPGG) was submitted for evaluation by CAPES through the Application for New Graduate Degree Program Proposals (APCN) in June 2010, which was approved at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) under Resolution No. 115/10. The Technical-Scientific Council for Higher Education (CTC-ES) of CAPES approved the Academic Master's Degree in Geography from February 28 to March 1, 2011, communicating to UFPI through Official Letter No. 012-18/2011. In this way, the Master’s Degree in Geography begins its academic activities in the Field of Study Organization of Space and Geographic Education organized into two Lines of Research: Regional and Geoenvironmental Studies and Geography Teaching. Objectives/Profile of the professional to be educated: To educate professionals in the area of Geography able to critically analyze processes and social actions in their relations with the organization of Brazilian space, with a greater emphasis on the regional scale where the territory of Piauí is located, highlighting the environmental problems arising from these interactions from the perspective of geographical science, thus raising a professional performance committed to facing the socio-spatial challenges of contemporaneity and improving the population's quality of life. To train research professors of Basic and Higher Education based on the expertise of approaches of Geographic Education currently, to face the Brazilian and regional educational problems, as effective agents of social transformation and education for citizenship. To contribute to the improvement of Geography programs at Higher Education Institutions in Piauí, combining the graduate degree production with the teaching and research at Undergraduate Degree level. To consolidate existing Research Groups that develop projects in geography and encourage the creation of new groups. To generate theoretical and empirical knowledge in geography, seeking to subsidize the elaboration of public policies aimed at regional scientific and socioeconomic development. Goals: To strengthen Research Groups linked to the Master's Degree to guarantee the optimization of production of the researchers involved with the program, meeting certain conditions established by funding agencies. To disseminate the bibliographic production of the Master's Degree through printed and electronic means in a systematic way, especially international, national, and regional journals, and books. To create a webpage and a journal for the Master’s Degree in Geography linked to the UFPI website as a way of increasing visibility of the internal processes of admission and academic production. To organize annual scientific events, starting with seminars and lecture cycles. To engage in exchange with other Graduate Degree Programs from national and international universities, especially those in areas related to the Master’s Degree in Geography at UFPI. To encourage the effective participation of the Program’s faculty in representative entities of Geography, such as the Brazilian Association of Geographers (AGB), and the National Association of Graduate Degree Program in Geography (ANPEGE). To guarantee a greater representation of UFPI in regional deliberative bodies: public hearings, forums, scientific events, and representative councils.
